Latin Epigraphy

No written memories but a handful of clay oil lamps and a bronze ring displaying a menorah is all that the Jews who in late Antiquity lived in Trapani and its surroundings left behind. We have therefore to stretch our gaze as far as Palermo Agrigento or Northern Africa to understand who they were, what they did and how they lived in an agitated period in a distant but much coveted province of the former Roman Empire while their Christian off springs were about to take the upper hand.

Nella sua veste attuale rispecchia l'articolazione, proposta da Enzo Lippolis, in tre fascicoli, il primo dei quali raccoglie studi e ricerche del Dipartimento, gli altri due sono dedicati a tematiche specifiche, con la prospettiva di promuovere una conoscenza complessiva dei vari aspetti delle società antiche. Le espressioni culturali, sociali, politiche e artistiche, come le strutture economiche, tecnologiche e ambientali, sono considerate parti complementari e interagenti dei diversi sistemi insediativi di cui sono esaminate funzioni e dinamiche di trasformazione. Le differenti metodologie applicate e la pluralità degli ambiti presi in esame (storici, archeologici, filologici, epigrafici, ecologico-naturalistici) non possono che contribuire a sviluppare la qualità scientifica, il confronto e il dialogo, nella direzione di una sempre più proficua interazione reciproca. In questo senso si spiega anche l'ampio contesto considerato, sia dal punto di vista cronologico, dalla preistoria al medioevo, sia da quello geografico, con una particolare attenzione rivolta alle culture del Mediterraneo, del Medio e del Vicino Oriente. I prossimi fascicoli del volume 27 (2021) accoglieranno le seguenti tematiche: 2. Roma e la formazione di un'Italia "romana". 3. Pratiche e teorie della comunicazione nella cultura classica.

Su posible identificación con la Mainake de las fuentes clásicas encaja con el elevado número de cerámicas griegas recuperado en las excavaciones del Cerro del Villar y del centro histórico de Málaga. Este trabajo tiene por objetivo abordar el estudio de los monumentos epigráficos que emplean la escritura prehumanística conservados en el territorio de la actual provincia de Murcia. Atendiendo a las particularidades que definen a este fenómeno escriturario propio de la transición del medievo a la Edad Moderna, abordamos la manera en la que se introdujeron las mayúsculas prehumanísticas en la producción epigráfica murciana, caracterizada por unas condiciones de precariedad como consecuencia de su particular contexto sociohistórico. El estudio se completa con un exhaustivo análisis paleográfico de las inscripciones estudiadas a fin de conocer la completa dimensión del fenómeno y poder contextualizarlo de manera correcta en el mapa de la epigrafía peninsular bajomedieval y moderna.

This volume presents a study of one of the most controversial dramatic genres of Greco-Roman antiquity, mime, based on the analysis of epigraphic texts. To this end, it offers a catalogue of Greek and Latin inscriptions of varied typology, chronology, and provenance related to mime writers, actors and mime performances. Each inscription is accompanied by a translation, commentary and images (when the physical support has been preserved), with the aim of presenting a rich documentary collection of great importance for the understanding of a largely enigmatic form of entertainment.

The corpus is preceded by a study of various aspects related to mime and epigraphic sources, including the challenges in defining this dramatic genre and its relation to other similar performances, mime actors in Greco-Roman society and the staging of plays in light of the inscriptions. Special attention is given to topics such as the participation of women in mime, the social and legal status of the performers, the composition of acting troupes and theatrical guilds and the presence of mime writers in epigraphic documentation.

Additionally, the final part of the volume includes an appendix of documentary papyri related to this form of entertainment, which complements the perspective provided by the epigraphic material.

In this contribution, the aim is to reflect on the Greek translations of Roman official acts, with a focus on the reconstruction of the offices and secretaries that had to deal with this task. For the republican age, through an analysis of some linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of the texts, I will try todemonstrate that the scribae who worked in the aerarium were responsible for the translations; they were required to translate not only scc., leges, or foedera, but also, if necessary, the letters of Roman magistrates. Secondly, I will focus on some official documents of the Augustan age: the Edicts of Cyrene, the so-called s.c. Calvisianum and a letter of Augustus to Cnidus. All of them are united by a pronounced Atticism, a stylistic unicum that allow to speculate that they were the product of the hand of a single translator in the service of the princeps. The translator must have been an intellectual of his court, influenced by the spread of literary Atticism that took place in Rome in the I cent. BC. Although a formalized officium did not yet exist, we can see that a semi-official administrative secretariat was already in operation at the time of Augustus, an embryo of what would later become
the offices of the age of Claudius.

This paper reviews the inscriptions left in Rome by some Eastern
hostages during the Julio-Claudian period. It is a very small but very interesting corpus of inscriptions, which has been extensively studied from a historical point of view. In this paper we will try to see what religious information can be deduced from this corpus, understanding the inscriptions as presentations that individuals make of themselves and their social image, using a methodology derived from Pragmatics and the presentation of individuals in social networks.

This thesis aims to explore the methods adopted by the Romans to annex the Central Anatolian Plateau into their empire after their arrival in 25 BCE. Specifically, this study will use the emergence and development of urbanism as a proxy for cultural, political, and economic integration, focusing on the regions of Galatia and northeastern Pisidia. After the annexation of Galatia in 25 BCE, the Romans expanded their territory in Galatia and northeastern Pisidia by establishing new colonies and cities as regional urban centers in areas with different settlement patterns prior to their arrival. These new urban centers, with their sophisticated infrastructure and extensive urban frameworks, served as focal points for the cultural, economic, and religious integration of local societies into the Roman Empire. They were gradually expanded with new monuments and public spaces over different periods. By employing a comparative approach to the urban development of two Augustan-era foundations in the Central Anatolian Plateau—Ankara and Pisidian Antioch (Yalvaç, Isparta)—this thesis will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of urbanization in integrating diverse populations and marginal areas into the Roman Empire. It will also offer a nuanced view of the long-term evolution of urbanism in this historically rich region by examining the transformation from pre-Roman settlements to sophisticated Roman urban centers.

This volume gathers the proceedings discussed in a 2023 Workshop organised at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid by the Departamento de Prehistoria, Historia Antigua y Arqueología in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichità of Sapienza Università di Roma. These papers address problems of an onomastic nature from a legal (not linguistic) perspective: the basic idea is that Roman onomastics cannot be dissociated from the legal status of people. An attempt is being made to valorise the less common names which are distant from the classic Roman onomastic system based on the tria nomina. The Spanish situation is compared with that of Northern Italy, whose inscriptions also present various problems of interpretation. More than answers and solutions, this volume aims to reopen the discussion on topics related to “Romanization” that are always fascinating.

Uma vez que o rico universo literário de Taunay permite uma série de diálogos intertextuais, este estudo se propõe a analisar como o autor, nas epígrafes do romance mencionado, dialoga com obras que datam da Antiguidade Clássica, bem como a relação entre as epígrafes e o enredo da obra. Para a realização desta pesquisa, serão considerados os seguintes objetivos: reflexões acerca da biografia (vida e obra) de Alfredo D'Escragnolle Taunay, pois a objetividade na representação dos fatos da realidade por adquirido pelo autor a partir de sua participação militar nas campanhas da guerra contra o Paraguai (1864-1870); uma análise da romance Inocência, cujo narrador é onisciente e se comporta como um guia, empregando termos científicos reveladores de uma visão especializada da natureza, em uma linguagem refinada, com atenção ao ritmo e à escolha cuidadosa das palavras, sem deixar de dar vazão à expansividade própria do olhar romântico; e, finalmente, a análise das epígrafes latinas de Inocência, que, além de apontarem para a erudição de Taunay, estabelecem um amplo diálogo entre o Romantismo brasileiro e a tradição literária da Grécia à contemporaneidade, sendo que a maioria delas pode ser considerada verdadeiros prenúncios do enredo, fundamentais à estratégia narrativa do romance. Ademais, o trabalho de fazer uma correspondência de Inocência com a literatura ocidental nas epígrafes conferiu um tom enigmático à obra, além de revelar a erudição de Taunay.

Influential studies in the history of cartography have argued that map-like representations of space were (virtually) unknown in the Classical Mediterranean world and that the cause of this was an absence of underlying cognitive maps. That is, persons in that time/place purportedly had only route/egocentric-type mental representations, not survey/allocentric ones. The present study challenges that cognitive claim by examining the verbal descriptions of plots of land produced by ancient Roman land-measurers. Despite the prescription of a route-based form, actual representations persistently show a variety of features which suggest the existence of underlying survey-type mental models and the integration of those with the route-type ones. This fits better with current views on interaction between types of spatial representation and of cultural difference in this area. The evidence also suggests a linkage between the two kinds of representations.

When we think of Romans, Julius Caesar or Constantine might spring
to mind. But what was life like for everyday folk – those who gazed up at
the palace rather than looking out from within its walls? In this book,
Jeremy Hartnett offers a detailed view of an average Roman, an individual
named Flavius Agricola. Though Flavius was only a generation or
two removed from slavery, his successful life emerges from his careful
commemoration in death: a poetic epitaph and life-sized marble portrait
showing him reclining at table. This ensemble not only enables
Hartnett to reconstruct Flavius’ biography, as well as his wife’s, but also
permits a nuanced exploration of many aspects of Roman life, such as
dining, sex, worship of foreign deities, gender, bodily display, cultural
literacy, religious experience, blended families, and visiting the dead at
their tombs. Teasing provocative questions from this ensemble,
Hartnett also recounts the monument’s scandalous discovery and extraordinary afterlife over the centuries.

The collective monograph presents a comprehensive corpus of performative adjuration formulae collated from Greek and Latin epigraphical sources. The texts—usually found inscribed on objects of practical magic and funerary monuments—are all commented and translated into English.

A principio del siglo XX España no tenía una estructura sobre el Turismo, pero ese gusanillo empezaba a picar en ciertos empresarios y a quemar a los gobiernos. Ya había varias Guías en países europeos, menos en España. Se confeccionaron varias guías turísticas, siendo la guía de un presbítero sui generis. Por lo influyente que este libro ha sido en los pueblos sevillanos, en especial, en Sanlúcar la Mayor, que sigue pegada a leyendas difundidas en él, es necesario llevar a cabo un análisis. CLAVES: Guía, Turismo, Aljarafe, Sanlúcar la Mayor, Monumentos, Rodrigo Caro, Sol Invicto. Sobre 1910, en plena tormenta turística en España, el presbítero Serrano Ortega redacta un libro interesándose por el Turismo. Lo subtitula Guía del Turista, pero en realidad ni es una guía ni es un libro de viaje, las dos modalidades de publicaciones que por entonces se estaban poniendo de moda. Es un popurrí turístico. El título del libro es "Monumentos de los pueblos de la provincia de Sevilla", con sello tipográfico de Fco. de P. Díaz, de Sevilla, en 1911, y en su portada informa que fue obra premiada por el Ateneo sevillano. El ejemplar que manejamos está digitalizado por la Biblioteca Nacional. No puede negarse que fue un ensayo innovador, por su publicación en ese momento, así como original, porque la temática salía fuera de la capital, donde las ruinas de Itálica venían copando el atractivo turístico internacional, y la Guía orgullecía el pasado histórico de la provincia, rompiendo con el egocentrismo existente por entonces, y ahora, de la capital. Otra cosa es que, como apostilla el presbítero en la dedicatoria 1 , fuese la primera Guía:

AE 1986, 734 = IAM-S 879 (first half of the III century AD; Volubilis, Mauretania Tingitana) was inscribed on the front of an altar dedicated to the god AVLISVA by the libertus and cobbler Valerius Victor. Although the piece has never been regarded as a carmen epigraphicum, the article shows that its first two lines contain a correct iambic senarius with middle caesura, granting either a vocalic or a consonant value to the first, the second or both the V of the name of AVLISVA.

The article presents a methodology to analyze the Greek amphora
epigraphy produced during the Roman Empire in its eastern part. The detailed information that appears as an abbreviated form in thousands of inscriptions distributed throughout the Roman territory is an essential element to understand the imperial socio-economic dynamics. Here we present a guide to using the Roman Open Data exploratory interface in its Greek text search section, and how, based on cases, we can determine for the first time the possible existence of a complex system of productions whose contracts would even be monthly.
The relational search system makes this interface the only one that allows the user to singularize their searches, granulating them based on their experience.

"There are no specific architectural features that would distinguish Arian churches from Catholic ones, except for the very important difference in the orientation of their foundations. When looking at the construction of early Christian basilicas in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it can be seen that almost all of them were built according to the same principle. Based on their construction style, they are referred to as so-called Bosnian basilicas. Out of a total of fifty-six confirmed finds, fifty-three are single-nave basilicas, while the remaining three belong to the type of three-nave basilicas (Otinovci near Kupres, Kumjenovići, and Ustikolina near Foča). Therefore, as can be seen, there are no two-nave basilicas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the reason for this remains unknown.

It is also very interesting that five finds of double basilicas (basilica gemina) have been discovered in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The arrangement and relationship of these two cult buildings indicate the existence of two church organizations in one place. One belonged to the Roman church, and the other to the Eastern Gothic Arians.

It is also interesting that the 'Bosnian' basilicas, in many cases, are wider than they are long, or they are built in a way that their sides are mostly equal, i.e., in the shape of a square. One of the characteristics of these basilicas is that baptisteries most often appear in the northern part of the building, and the orientation of the basilicas in the directions of NE-SW, and NW-SE is almost a regular feature in most basilicas of this country. The most consistent addition to early Christian basilicas is the burial vault. A large number of early Christian sacred buildings contain one or more such burial vaults, and it seems to be common that these vaults are frequently found alongside the basilicas, and vice versa.

If we look at the time period of the basilicas' construction, there is only one answer: over 90% of these buildings date from the 5th or 6th century, while only a few can be dated to the 4th century.

Furthermore, we believe that the Bosnian national church developed from Gothic Arianism, from which the Bosnian Church would later evolve.

Recent genetic research shows that the most prominent genetic code in the genome (DNA profile) of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Illyrian.

With this in mind, we conclude that the foundation for correctly 'reading' and understanding the early and later history of Bosnia lies in the Illyrian-Gothic era of dominance in the territory of today's Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, Roman authority disappeared from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the mid-6th century, after the Gothic Wars, Justinian, the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (later known in history as Byzantium), would formally restore Roman authority, but the empire no longer had the power to govern these lands.

Then came the Avars and Slavs, who would finish off the remnants of Roman civilization and everything that was left as the legacy and heritage of that era. The Romanized population withdrew to the Adriatic coast or the mountainous regions.

This was followed by a period of isolation, from the 6th to the 10th century, during which the area of Bosnia remained closed off to the outside world, and history provides almost no data about this time.

Decimated and without any means, the population continued life based on tradition, but without the possibility to build large and beautiful, even ecclesiastical structures.

In this period of isolation, the people of Bosnia began to form the Bosniak nation and the oldest early feudal state among the South Slavs, the Banate of Bosnia."

La protoforma céltica *bedo-'canal, mina', un sustantivo de resultado derivado de la raíz verbal PIE *bhedh(h2)-'(ex)cavar', gozó de relativa productividad en los dialectos célticos tanto insulares como continentales y en el terreno de los nombres comunes y propios por igual. En el presente artículo tenemos como objetivo, en primer lugar, confeccionar un panorama derivativo crítico de todas estas voces heredadas en céltico y, en segundo lugar, sumar a esta nutrida nómina otras formas que hasta la fecha no han sido analizadas como derivadas de *bedo-, ampliando de este modo nuestro conocimiento sobre las lenguas, la teonimia y la realidad material de los antiguos celtas.

En los epigramas de Marcial son frecuentes las referencias a la comida y al juego; en especial en los libros XIII y XIV, titulados Xenia y Apophoreta respectivamente, en alusión a los regalos sorteados e intercambiados en los banquetes ofrecidos durante las fiestas Saturnales, celebradas en diciembre. Las composiciones de ambos libros están asociadas con la comida, el regalo, el juego y la diversión, que caracterizaban los días de dichas festividades. Pero, además, los libros XIII y XIV tienen, por una parte, un fin lúdico en sí mismos, pues sirven para jugar y como juego, tal como los acertijos y las adivinanzas o los billetes de rifas y tómbolas; y por la otra, ofrecen una «preceptiva del juego», una literatura lúdica cuyo tema central es el juego. En este trabajo se analizan estas dos dimensiones.

The medieval manuscript tradition passes down a group of Late Antique Latin poems related to Carthage. Scholars have repeatedly associated them with Latin verse inscriptions. This matter is of primary interest to me since the ‘poetic landscape’ of this Roman city is at the very heart of my doctoral thesis. In this paper, my aim is firstly to contextualise and give an overview of these texts and secondly to offer a brief history of the studies aimed at understanding them and to elaborate on motivations for claiming their ‘epigraphic genuinity’. Lastly, I will present and discuss a selected group of these poems in order to put the previous argumentation to the test and to propose new insights.

I due frammenti di architrave rivenuti a Tunisi nel 1894 e nel 1907 riportanti un’iscrizione in versi che loda le Terme di Gebamondo sono stati da sempre considerati parte di un singolo monumento. Tuttavia, il confronto paleografico tra i due mostra che sono stati realizzati da mani diverse. Sostengo che i frammenti appartengano a due copie della stessa iscrizione. Poi, ipotizzando che le due copie avessero una impaginazione simile, ho verificato se le varie integrazioni proposte per la parte centrale mancante siano compatibili con lo spazio della lacuna.

Excavations carried out between 2010 and 2013 for the construction of the new San Giovanni underground station led to the discovery of new epigraphic evidence, dating 1st c. BC-3rd c. AD. Found in fragments, mainly in the anthropic units as scrap material, they are currently exhibited in the area of the San Giovanni station and are here published for the first time. An engraved finger-ring gemstone with its owner's name surely outweighs in interest the other finds. However, the whole ensemble can cast some light upon a vast area of Rome's suburbium.

This paper discusses a total of 21 bone and bronze hairpins from the Roman military site of Călugăreni / Mikháza. Although evidence confirms the presence of bone-working workshops operating at the site, bone and bronze hairpins are represented in nearly equal proportions. Furthermore, eight hairpins were discovered within the fort, which, along with other pieces of jewelry, suggests the presence of women in this military context.

This paper provides a critical overview on the newest literature about the epigraphic elogium of Titus Annius, one of the commissioners trusted in 169 BC to lead new settlers to Aquileia (Aep 1996, 685). The topics are: identification of the personality; typology of the monument and the inscription; dating and occasion of the dedication; original location of the statue; actions of the triumvirate in the colony; location and function of the temple; possible connection of the triumvir with the via Annia.

Resumen El estudio de las villae ha sido un tema recurrente en la historiografía desde el siglo XIX. Pese a ello, no ha sido hasta hace algunas décadas que las investigaciones se han centrado en sus momentos finales durante la tardoantigüedad. Así, su proceso de desaparición es una cuestión todavía en debate. Aunque no tenemos todas las claves para comprender cómo es la realidad de las villae durante la Antigüedad tardía, la puesta en común de los datos disponibles sí nos permite tener una visión global y comparativa del espacio. En este artículo presentaremos un análisis comparativo de la evolución de las villae tardías en el espacio centro-pirenaico (a ambos lados de la cordillera) fruto de la recopilación en una base de datos de los datos arqueológicos disponibles en la bibliografía y en los archivos de los servicios regionales de arqueología.

En este artículo, tenemos como propuesta debatir nociones laicas y religiosas del tiempo cotidiano vivenciado en diferentes contextos de la Antigüedad Tardía occidental. Con el intuito de analizar tales nociones, analizamos obras de auctores “civiles” como Macrobio Ambrosio Teodosio y Decimo Magno Ausonio, auctores militares como Ammiano Marcelino, Flavio Renato Vegécio y auctores eclesiásticos, entre ellos, Agustín de Hipona, Cesáreo de Arles, Ambrosio de Milán, Aurelio Prudencio y Isidoro de Sevilla. Volcados a la idea de sincronización y diferenciación entre tradición y “novedades” defendida por James Ker (2023), teniendo como perspectiva cuestiones referentes al tiempo cotidiano, investigamos como los grupos sociales establecidos en los espacios rurales y urbanos del occidente tardoantigüo dividían sus festividades y actividades a lo largo de los días y de las noches.

This paper aims to work on a book authored by Brás Luís de Abreu, entitled Sol Nascido No Occidente, e Posto Ao Nascer Do Sol, S. Antonio Portugues, from 1725, a biography of Fernando Bulhões (or Martins), who was born in Lisbon (Portugal) at the end of the 12th century and died in Padua (Italy) in the 13th century, better known as Saint Anthony (to whose name both Lisbon and Padua have added their respective toponymic). In this text, Saint Anthony is compared to various figures from classical antiquity (gods, heroes, mythological and historical figures) and Christianity. The intention is to examine the characteristics of Heracles/Hercules, analyzing which were chosen and which were omitted, how they are described in relation to the roles of each, and how they contributed to the praise of the saint (the final goal of the work).

The figure of John the Baptist is often the subject of commentary by Ambrose of Milan, especially in the Expositio on the Gospel of Luke. The Gospel texts that speak of the Forerunner raise various exegetical and theological questions, which Ambrose addresses having as a background the dispute with the Arians and the Novatians. At the center of the discourse are several important conceptual pairs-Old and New Testaments, law and grace, penance and sacraments-which Ambrose declines by trying to affirm both the otherness and the continuity between the two. John the Baptist is also an example of asceticism, useful for exhortation, and above all a model of courage in opposing the injustice of political power.
