A STUDY ON FOOD CONSUMPTION AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF STUDENTS AT A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN SALVADOR, BA (Atena Editora), 2023
Introduction: The dietary pattern is a crucial point in the life of human beings, it is through it that it is possible to understand how they are eating. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the nutritional status, which must be carried out according to the age group, food consumption and the lifestyle of each individual. In this sense, the school environment has proven to be a place of excellent opportunities, enabling the formation of healthy eating habits during students' stay in that space. Furthermore, the school must be a gateway and an incentive for food and nutritional education for students, through healthy eating practices and the adoption of an active lifestyle, respecting the subject's autonomy, regional culture, food sovereignty, as well as such as the importance of access to adequate food in quality and quantity. Objective: To evaluate the food consumption and nutritional status of students at a public school in Salvador-BA. Methods: This is a field research, collecting primary data (Weight, Height, Body Mass Index diagnosis and Waist Circumference) and markers of food consumption measured through the application of the Ministry of Health form. Research is based on a convenience sample; this technique is very common and consists of selecting a sample of the studied population that is accessible and has availability/interest in participating in the study. Students were invited to this research randomly, selected on average of 10 students per class from the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th year of elementary school II. In this selection, there was no distinction regarding ethnicity, family income, gender, age or any type of illness to participate in the study. The results obtained were tabulated to demonstrate the graphs and tables. Results and discussion: in relation to foods considered healthy markers, it was found that 90.3% of participants used electronic devices during meals, 61.1% consumed beans, 58.3% ate fresh fruit and 48.6% consumed vegetables the day before. In relation to ultra-processed foods, the hamburger and/or sausage group was consumed by 41.7%, with the intake of sweetened drinks being observed in 70.8%; instant noodles registered at 58.3% and stuffed biscuits were consumed by 66.7% among those interviewed. These data show that half of the public had the habit of consuming fruits and vegetables, however the presence of ultra-processed foods was observed significantly and may be contributing to the 10% prevalence of overweight and 9% of obesity among the target audience. Considering that half of the participants consumed fruit, it would be appropriate in the future to quantify this consumption pattern to better understand it. Another aspect that can favor weight gain would be the lack of regular physical and sporting activity. Final considerations: In view of the analysis of the findings, it is important to understand that food choices can directly influence students' quality of life. Even though healthy foods are present in half of those interviewed, we emphasize that the school can increase this result by adopting practices that stimulate and form healthy eating habits, aiming to improve lifestyle. Weight gain may be associated with a sedentary lifestyle, excessive use of electronic media during meals, as well as the consumption of ultra-processed foods, highlighted in this study. Therefore, the school must encourage the formation of healthy eating habits on a daily basis, with playful strategies, systematic training on food and nutritional education and the provision of healthy foods in school meals. It is expected that stimulating everyday life with examples and educational actions can effectively contribute to better food choices and, consequently, to improving the quality of life of the school community.

Objective: To describe the profile of food preferences, likes and dislikes of Spanish children and young people and analyse its connection with prevailing food patterns. Design: Cross-sectional population survey. Setting: Population study. Data were collected at participants' home address. Subjects: Random sample of the Spanish population aged 2-24 y (n ¼ 3534; 1629 boys and 1905 girls). Interventions: Food preferences, food consumption and practices as well as nutrition-related information were assessed by means of a multiple choice questionnaire. A food preference score was computed considering food items ranked as first, second or third choice within each food group. Data collection was carried out during May 1998-April 2000. Results: Bananas and apples were the fruit items preferred by Spanish children and young people across all age and gender groups. Within the vegetable group tomato sauce and salads, particularly lettuce and tomato salad scored highest, followed by carrots in all age and gender groups. However, 47% (95% confidence interval 46-48%) of the sample reported dislike for vegetables and an additional 5.7% (95% confidence interval 4.9-6.5%) a dislike for fruit. The proportion of individuals with low consumption of vegetables or fruit was significantly higher among those reporting a dislike either for vegetables (w 2 ¼ 127.69; Po0.001); fruit (w 2 ¼ 24.62; Po0.001) or for both groups (w 2 ¼ 81.53; Po0.001). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the likes/dislikes for fruits and vegetables and usual consumption of this food group among children and young people. Strategies addressed to improve acceptance for this food group should be considered when designing interventions aimed at promoting adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables among children and young people.

Food habit strongly predicts individual nutritional status. It is largely influenced by family food habit and family socioeconomic, partly by nutrition education learning in the school. Objectives of this study were to analyze elementary school children eating habit and examine whether it relates to family socioeconomic and nutritional status. One hundred elementary school children, and their mother, from one school in urban Bogor were chosen purposively according to SIBERMAS Program criteria (i.e. grade 4 th and 5 th , morning school, having UKS program and not having canteen). Self administered, structured pre-coded questionnaire were used to collect the data. Nutritional status was assessed using weight and height, and body mass index for age (BAZ) and height for age (HAZ) were then calculated using Anth-roPlus software developed by WHO (2009). School children were 8-11 years old (mean 9.37 + 0.66 years), more girls (54%), and mostly had normal nutritional status using both indexes (72% for BAZ and 95% for HAZ). School children were commonly from middle class as indicated by father education (sarjana) and mother (senior high school). Almost all school children (99%) knew breakfast was important and 81% of them ate breakfast. Only 32% school children brought lunch box everyday although 92% stated their habit to bring lunch box to school. Buying snack in school was also common among school children. Generally school children ate rice 3 times a day (2.95 + 0.97) with fish, meat, chicken (2.47 + 1.14), tempe and tofu (2.22 + 1.10), vegetables (2.25 + 0.76) and fruits (2.37 + 1.31). There was a tendency overweight and obese school children eat more rice although statistically not significant. On average, school children drank milk more than twice daily (2.34 + 0.98), plain water more than 7 glasses daily (7.34 + 4.10), exercise 3 times weekly (3.02 + 2.16) and no difference were observed between nutritional status and family socioeconomics. School children food habit were strongly supported by mother behavior especially in providing breakfast, lunch box and guiding their children in choosing snack food. School children from middle class in urban Bogor had relatively good food habits which were supported by mother behavior. This study found no relationship between family socioeconomic and nutritional status on school children food habit.
